Environmental, Political & Economic Context of Medicinal Plant Use

September 28, 2016 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
$30

How does the use of medicinal plants in Latin America react to environmental, political & economic factors? Botanical author and NGO executive Jane Segleau Earle explains the obstacle course that traditional herbalists must face in order to practice their medicine. Rainforest destruction, broken treaties, miltary coups, religious expansion, public policy and poverty all impact the extent to which botanical knowledge is passed down and utilized. Jane will discuss solutions and pockets of success, including her work at the non-profit ASIREA which promotes local, sustainable products, and how students of Latino herbalism can contribute to its survival.
