Dr. Pablo Ortiz is a pioneer in the field of Integrative Medicine. He started Costa Rica’s first culturally-aware public health clinic in San Vito, near the Panamanian border. This clinic expands the definition of health to include education about fare wages and human rights, opportunities to earn income, spiritual Indigenous medicine and traditional use of botanical medicines. Respect for the Indigenous culture is expressed in the architecture, where the buildings are round and clustered as in a traditional village. It is in the hospital gown which resembles traditional women’s dresses and most of all, in that the patients can choose to see a medical doctor or a traditional healer, or both.
